Recovery involves an organization's ability to minimize the impact of, and to return to normalcy, in as short a time as possible. Recovering from an emergency event is the direct result of the pre-planning. It is the culmination of planning, training and testing that enhances the ability of both individuals and organizations to return to normalcy in as short a time as possible. The impact on others is also a factor in the equation and must be considered in advance.
- Are your providers of transportation or emergency equipment or critical supplies and materials also likely to be impacted?
- Do they reside in the same region? How will managers or employees who fill critical positions be impacted by events?
- Do they live in areas vulnerable to transportation interruptions or weather-related conditions?
- Is the client capable of building redundant capability for these eventualities?
All of these factors, and more, are considerations of the planning process and although they may not have all the answers, owners, executives, government officials and individuals will have an improved ability to understand the impact of events and coordinate with each other to reduce that impact. Insurance underwriters have also been made part of the process to improve their understanding of the clients enhanced readiness posture and ensure that appropriate coverages are in place to minimize risk and provide the necessary services and resources to assist through the recovery process. One out of every 4 businesses that closes its doors as a result of a disaster will never reopen. For many, the most meaningful outcome of this process is the piece of mind in knowing that appropriate steps have been taken to prevent those circumstances.
